Industrial Psychologist (IP)

Spear Specialist Earnings is seeking a qualified Industrial Psychologist (IP) to join our dynamic team. This role plays a pivotal part in ensuring the accuracy, credibility, and professional quality of all psychological assessments and medico-legal reports, while upholding ethical standards and contributing to continuous improvement in processes, systems, and training. The successful candidate will work closely with Earnings Specialists and attorneys, offer expert guidance and testimony.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct psychological/psychometric assessments of clients as required.
  • Formulate clear, evidence-based conclusions regarding future career potential and work capacity within the scope of industrial psychology.
  • Compile high-quality medico-legal reports in line with professional and legal standards.
  • Ensure timely report delivery, with a standard turnaround time following receipt of all relevant documentation.
  • Engage in consultations with legal representatives and clients as needed, either telephonically or in person.
  • Participate in the drafting of joint minutes with fellow experts, including those arising from previously issued reports.
  • Provide expert testimony in court when required, including on previously issued reports.
  • Check each report and ensure accuracy, quality, credibility, and unbiased arguments.
  • Determine policy on how to approach different cases.
  • Stay up to date on legal developments relevant to the IP and earnings space.
  • Contribute to company efficiency and the ongoing improvement of processes.
  • Build and maintain relationships with attorneys and other relevant specialists.
  • Contribute to the design of client-friendly reports.
  • Put systems in place to avoid groupthink and ensure independence in professional judgment.
  • Provide guidance and training to internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Industrial/Organisational Psychology
  • Registration with the HPCSA as an Industrial Psychologist
  • Minimum of 1–3 years’ experience post-registration (open to earlier-career professionals with relevant experience)

Business Skills / Knowledge

  • Familiarity with medico-legal processes, including assessment protocols and report standards
  • Understanding of court procedures related to expert testimony
  • Ability to manage case files, documentation, and professional correspondence efficiently
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise competing tasks
  • Professional report writing and verbal communication skills

Industry Skills / Knowledge

  • Applied knowledge of psychometric testing and career assessments (advantageous)
  • Understanding of labour market trends and implications for work capacity evaluations
  • Knowledge of relevant legal and ethical standards within medico-legal and psychological practice
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams
  • Familiarity with SA labour law implications in psychological assessments (advantageous)
